Getting from one place to another is the second largest expense in most American households, after housing. The car you drive, the transit you ride, the flight you book — each involves information asymmetries that cost you money, time, or both. The car dealership knows the invoice price. The airline knows the cancellation policy. The mechanic knows whether the repair is necessary. You know what’s on the sticker, the confirmation email, and the estimate. The Skills that follow close those gaps.


Tr-1: Car Ownership

Strategy: Research + Decide + Assert See also: L-1: Negotiating a Contract (for the purchase agreement), M-6: Financial Coach (for the financing decision) My Man Jeeves: One might observe that the automobile dealership represents perhaps the most refined information asymmetry in American commerce. The dealer is in possession of the invoice price, the holdback, the manufacturer incentives, the floor plan cost, the trade-in wholesale value, and the financing margin. The customer, by contrast, is in possession of the sticker price — a figure the dealer has placed there with the express intention that one will negotiate downward from it and experience a sense of victory. It would appear that an Agent, having access to the invoice price as well, alters the nature of the exchange rather considerably. The Spec:

What to do with the Output: For buying: get pre-approved for financing from your bank or credit union before walking into the dealership. The dealer’s financing is a profit center, not a convenience. Know the invoice price (your Agent can find it) and negotiate from the dealer’s cost up, not the sticker price down. For selling: get your car’s value from KBB, Edmunds, and Carvana before accepting any offer. The spread between trade-in and private sale is typically $2,000–$5,000. If you’re buying used, price isn’t the only asymmetry in the room — the seller has usually seen the car in daylight, in person, over weeks or months. You’re seeing it for twenty minutes. Before you commit to anything, see the Expert Role spec that follows.

Common car-buying Expert Role specs: A tire sidewall carries more information than most buyers ever read — a DOT date code (the last four digits are the week and year of manufacture) and, on tires built to an automaker’s own spec, an OE designation (Tesla-fitted tires are marked T0 or T1).[1] Both are legible in an ordinary close-up photo, which is exactly what this spec asks for — along with the rest of what a mechanic would check before you’ve handed anyone money.

Act as a mechanic and longtime car enthusiast looking over
photos of a used car I’m considering buying. Here’s the
listing: [year, make, model, mileage, asking price]. Photos
attached: all four exterior corners, each tire close up
(sidewall included), the engine bay, underneath the car if
visible, the VIN sticker and the dashboard VIN plate, the
odometer, and any area the seller mentioned was repaired or
repainted.
What would a mechanic or enthusiast notice here that I
wouldn’t? Specifically:
1. Signs of prior collision repair — panel gaps, paint
color or texture mismatch, overspray on trim or in the
engine bay
2. Rust — surface rust versus structural rust, and whether
it’s in the spots this model is known to rust first
3. Tire brand and sidewall codes — do they carry this
model’s factory-original marking, if any; does the DOT
date code match how old the seller says the tires are;
and does the wear pattern suggest an alignment or
suspension problem
4. Fluid leaks, corrosion, or anything under the hood that
looks neglected relative to the car’s age and mileage
5. Whether the VIN sticker locations and the dashboard VIN
plate are consistent with each other
Give me the most conservative read. I’ll pay for an
independent pre-purchase inspection before I commit to
buying if anything here looks worth a closer look.

Tr-2: Car Maintenance

Strategy: Diagnose + Research (Expert Role) See also: Tr-1: Car Ownership, L-1: Negotiating a Contract (for understanding service agreements) My Man Jeeves: A difficulty presents itself in the automotive repair trade, which operates on the well-documented principle that most vehicle owners do not know what their car requires, cannot verify whether the work was performed, and will pay to resolve the uncertainty. One might note that an Agent, having consulted the service manual, is rather better positioned to assess the situation. It is worth observing that persons of considerable means do not, as a rule, accept the first quotation. There would seem to be no reason why anyone else should. The Spec:

Tr-3: Public Transit, Cycling, and Walkability

Strategy: Research + Navigate See also: Li-5: Planning Trips (for transit in unfamiliar cities), C-6: Advocating for Change (for local transit advocacy) My Man Jeeves: It would appear that the United States has devoted the better part of seventy years to constructing an infrastructure that assumes every adult to be in possession of a motor car. The consequence, one might observe, is a country in which not driving is regarded as a personal failing rather than a design outcome. In cities where functional transit, cycling infrastructure, and walkable neighbourhoods exist, car-free or car-light living saves thousands of dollars per year and improves health outcomes measurably. In cities where these things do not exist, the absence is a policy choice, not an inevitability — and it can be altered at the local level, by those who present themselves at the relevant meetings. One’s Agent can help one evaluate the options, calculate the savings, and — should advocacy be required — prepare for the meeting. The Spec:

What to do with the Output: Save the cost comparison to your phone — that number is your motivation on cold mornings. Start with one trip per week. Replace one car trip with transit, cycling, or walking. The compound health benefit is real — a 2017 BMJ study found that cycling to work reduced all-cause mortality risk by 20% and cancer risk by 16%.[3] The financial benefit is calculable: AAA’s Your Driving Costs 2025 report puts the average cost of new-car ownership at $11,577/year. Every trip you don’t drive reduces that number.


Tr-4: Air Travel

Strategy: Prepare + Assert See also: Li-5: Planning Trips (for trip planning broadly), IRL-3: First-Time Situations (for first-time flyers) My Man Jeeves: One might characterize air travel as a system that charges variable prices for the same seat, enforces rules that shift by airline, route, and day of the week, and operates under federal consumer protection laws that most passengers have not had occasion to read. The airline is aware of one’s fare class, one’s rebooking options, and the compensation it owes. The passenger, as a general rule, is aware of a confirmation number. An Agent, it would appear, has access to the same regulations the airline’s customer service team consults — which places one in the rather more agreeable position of being able to cite them as well. The Spec:

What to do with the Output: For disruptions: know your rights before you get in line. The DOT requires airlines to rebook you on the next available flight at no additional cost for cancellations. For delays over 3 hours on international flights arriving in the EU, EC 261/2004 entitles you to compensation of €250–€600 depending on distance. Airlines do not volunteer this information. You must ask. The specific regulation number is your leverage.


Tr-5: Road Trips and Long-Distance Driving

Strategy: Prepare + Navigate See also: Tr-2: Car Maintenance, Li-5: Planning Trips My Man Jeeves: One might observe that the interstate highway system, for all its considerable merits, was designed under the assumption that the traveller is in possession of a reliable vehicle, a full tank, and the good fortune not to require medical attention between exits. The reality, one has found, is rather less accommodating. Rest stops close without notice. Cell service evaporates for stretches that are precisely as long as one’s capacity for anxiety. The distance between fuel stations in the American West can exceed the range of a vehicle whose gauge reads optimistic in the best of circumstances. An Agent, consulted before departure, can identify every one of these gaps — and suggest what to put in the boot to address them. The Spec:

What to do with the Output: Print the route plan and emergency checklist. Take the car to your mechanic two weeks before departure — not two days — in case something needs ordering. Download offline maps for any stretch where your Agent flagged poor cell coverage. The emergency kit goes in the car now, not the morning you leave.


Tr-6: Understanding Rideshare and Delivery Gig Work

Strategy: Research + Decode See also: W-7: Freelancing and Self-Employment, M-7: Understanding Your Taxes My Man Jeeves: The rideshare arrangement presents a matter of some interest from both sides of the transaction. The passenger perceives a taxi that has been made more convenient; the driver perceives a job that has been made less stable. The company, one might note, has structured the arrangement so that neither party is in full possession of how the pricing works. Surge pricing is presented to the passenger as supply and demand. To the driver, the surge multiplier and the fare the passenger pays are not, as it happens, the same number. One’s Agent can decode both sides of this equation — which is rather the point. The Spec:

What to do with the Output: If you’re a rider, the practical move is knowing when not to surge: your Agent can tell you that walking two blocks outside a surge zone, waiting 10 minutes, or switching apps often drops the price 30–50%. If you’re a driver, paste your last month’s earnings and expenses and ask your Agent to calculate your true hourly wage after all costs. That number is the one the platform doesn’t show you.


Tr-7: Navigating International Travel

Strategy: Prepare + Navigate See also: Tr-4: Air Travel, IRL-3: First-Time Situations, Li-5: Planning Trips My Man Jeeves: International travel, one has observed, is governed by a set of interlocking bureaucracies — passports, visas, customs declarations, foreign transit systems, currency exchange — each of which operates under rules that are fully public, entirely discoverable, and almost never consulted by the traveller until the evening before departure. The consequence is predictable. One finds oneself at passport control in a country whose entry requirements one has not verified, holding a document that expires in four months when the requirement is six. An Agent, consulted in advance, would have mentioned this. It is, in this respect, rather like a good valet: most useful when engaged before the crisis, not during it. The Spec:

What to do with the Output: Start six months out for any trip requiring a visa. Passport renewal currently takes 6–8 weeks routine, 2–3 weeks expedited — check travel.state.gov for current times, because these fluctuate. Make copies of your passport, visa, and travel insurance — one paper copy in your bag, one digital copy in your email. The boring preparation is what makes the trip work.


Tr-8: Accessible Transportation

Strategy: Assert + Navigate See also: Tr-3: Public Transit, Cycling, and Walkability, C-3: Understanding Your Rights Where You Live My Man Jeeves: The Americans with Disabilities Act, one might observe, guarantees accessible public transportation as a matter of federal law. The distance between the guarantee and the experience, however, is considerable. Paratransit services operate within rules that are technically compliant and practically hostile — narrow booking windows, multi-hour pickup ranges, penalties for no-shows that assume the rider’s schedule is infinitely flexible. The elevator at the train station is broken again. The bus ramp does not deploy. The rideshare driver cancels upon seeing the wheelchair. These are not edge cases. They are the system as experienced by the people it claims to serve. An Agent can help one know precisely what the law requires, file the complaint when it is not provided, and identify the alternatives that actually function. The Spec:

What to do with the Output: Know the complaint mechanism before you need it. For transit agencies: every agency receiving federal funds must have an ADA complaint process. For airlines: file with the DOT’s Aviation Consumer Protection Division. For rideshare: document the cancellation (screenshot the app) and report through both the app and your state’s attorney general. Your Agent can draft any of these complaints. The specific legal citation is your leverage — agencies respond to “you are violating 49 CFR Part 37” differently than “this isn’t fair.”


Tr-9: Electric Vehicles and the Transition

One camp insists that the technology is not ready. The other insists it will save the planet by Tuesday. Neither, it would appear, has consulted a spreadsheet. The pertinent questions are rather more pedestrian: can one charge it where one lives, what does it cost to own over five years compared to what one drives now, and does the used market offer anything that a household of ordinary means can afford. An Agent, being unburdened by ideology on the matter, can answer all three — which places one in the agreeable position of making a decision based on arithmetic rather than allegiance. The Spec:

What to do with the Output: The 5-year total cost of ownership is the only number that matters. If the EV is cheaper over 5 years and you can charge it, the decision is arithmetic. If you can’t charge at home — and a substantial share of Americans cannot, because they rent or lack dedicated off-street parking — the calculus changes significantly. Be honest with your Agent about your charging situation. The best EV for someone with a garage and a 240V outlet is not the best EV for someone who relies on public chargers.


Tr-10: Boating, RVs, and Niche Vehicles

Strategy: Research + Navigate See also: Tr-1: Car Ownership, M-8: Insurance My Man Jeeves: The purchase of a boat, a recreational vehicle, or a similarly specialized conveyance introduces one to a regulatory environment that appears to have been designed by a committee whose members were not on speaking terms. Registration requirements vary by state and by waterway. Insurance is mandatory in some jurisdictions, optional in others, and confusingly priced in all of them. Licensing requirements range from nonexistent to Coast Guard certification, depending on the vessel’s length and one’s state of residence. The RV, for its part, occupies an existential category — part vehicle, part dwelling — that satisfies the requirements of neither the DMV nor the building code with any particular enthusiasm. One’s Agent, having no emotional attachment to the open water or the open road, can sort through the bureaucracy rather efficiently. The Spec:

Be specific to my state. The rules vary and the wrong answer
is expensive.

What to do with the Output: The total annual cost of ownership — not the purchase price — is what you need. Boats and RVs have carrying costs that surprise first-time owners: storage ($100–$400/month), winterization ($300–$500), insurance ($500–$2,000/year), and maintenance that scales with age and size. Ask your Agent to build an annual budget that includes every line item. If the number is comfortable, proceed. If it isn’t, renting is not a consolation prize — it’s the financially literate choice.
